The financial benefits of off-season travel to your dream destinations

Traveling off-season to your dream destinations can transform the way you experience the world, not just through less crowded vistas and a more authentic experience, but significantly through the lens of financial savings. This strategy not only opens the door to exploring enchanting landscapes and cultures but does so in a manner that is kinder to your wallet.

In this article, we delve deep into the myriad financial benefits of off-season travel, from slashed accommodation prices to affordable flights and unique opportunities that are not available during the peak season. By the end of this piece, you will be equipped with insightful tips and tricks to maximize your travel experiences while minimizing expenses, ensuring your journey is as enriching as it is economically savvy.

Understanding Off-Season Travel

Off-season travel refers to visiting a destination during periods when it experiences the lowest tourist influx. This timeframe varies across different regions and is influenced by factors such as weather, local events, and holidays. The off-season is often characterized by more moderate weather, fewer tourists, and a slower pace of life, offering a more relaxed and intimate experience of your dream destinations.

Financial Advantages of Traveling Off-Season

1. Reduced Airfare and Accommodation Costs

One of the most tangible benefits of traveling off-season is the significant reduction in airfare and accommodation costs. Airlines and hotels lower their prices to attract visitors during these slower months, allowing savvy travelers to enjoy luxury stays and comfortable flights at a fraction of the cost. This section will provide real-world examples of how prices differ from peak to off-season, showcasing the potential savings.

2. Dining and Experiences

Beyond the basics of airfare and lodging, off-season travel can also translate to savings on dining, tours, and experiences. With fewer tourists vying for the same attractions, many service

Creekside Village residents in Florence moving out of hotels | News

FLORENCE — A few Housing Authority of Florence residents continue to live in hotels after their apartment building was declared unsafe, despite significant progress.

That means some will be celebrating the holidays from their hotel room.

Officials promise that the yearlong Creekside Village debacle will be over soon.

“I think everything worked out,” said Executive Director Alphonso Bradley, who took over midway through the crisis. “With all the transition we had, everything seems to have worked out. We set an aggressive timeline, and we didn’t meet it, but it caused us to work extra hard. I feel good about where we are.”

Jerrod Moultrie, the Housing Authority Commission’s vice chair, said the agency’s goal is to move Creekside residents out of hotels “as fast as we can.” But like Bradley, he said he felt good about the authority’s position.

Days of mold: Florence Housing Authority residents tired of living in hotels

It has been nearly a year since roughly 80 people were hastily moved to hotels after mold was discovered in the Creekside Village apartment complex off of West Palmetto Street.

Amid turmoil at the agency, which provides affordable housing to thousands of people across the Pee Dee, it took months to make any progress finding permanent homes.

Bradley promised in August that the agency would move the last 40 or so people out within three months. The Housing Authority blew past that deadline but has made steps in the right direction. About eight people remain as of the end of December, Bradley said.

Officials are moving about two people into new homes every week, he said.

Creekside residents who were displaced complained they lived in close quarters with few of their belongings and with little to no support or communication from the Housing Authority. Many spent months living out of a small hotel room on the outskirts of Florence.

IcelandAir changed my flights. Can I get a refund for my tour? | Entertainment/Life

I recently booked a vacation package online through IcelandAir Holidays. Two months later, I received a text message that my airport had been changed from Baltimore/Washington International Airport to Dulles International Airport.

I realized that traveling to Dulles would be inconvenient because it is a two-hour drive from my home in Baltimore. BWI is only 25 minutes away. Using a cab or car service would incur extra expenses, so I wanted to discuss options with IcelandAir Holidays.

Much to my consternation, I could not find a contact phone number, email or live chat to assist. The website instructions led me to a customer support form. I completed the customer support form and requested a refund. I received an autoreply.

No one from IcelandAir Holidays has responded. I have not received a refund to my credit card. The lack of response from IcelandAir Holidays is frustrating and unacceptable. Can you help me get my $2,972 back? — Patricia Boyle, Baltimore

IcelandAir Holidays should have responded to you and helped you figure out what to do. But a refund? I’m not sure about that.

IcelandAir Holidays’ terms and conditions address itinerary changes. It says if the company makes “a major change” to your travel arrangements, it will give you the choice of accepting the new itinerary or canceling and receiving a full refund.

However, “This doesn’t apply for minor changes.”

So I guess the question is: Was this a major change?

I say it is. It’s a 56-mile drive from BWI to Dulles, but getting there in Washington’s infamous traffic can take a while. If you planned to take cab to the airport, it would cost a lot more than getting to BWI. IcelandAir Holidays should have offered to cover the cost difference — that is, if it had responded.

Sculpture garden’s bead tree celebrates New Orleans Carnival | Arts

In this series, Lagniappe presents a different work each week from the collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art, with commentary from a curator.

Zaha Hadid was recognized as a major force in architecture thanks to dramatically futuristic buildings that transformed public spaces around the world with awe-inspiring curves and sharp angles in concrete, glass and steel.

The first woman to win the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004, Hadid designed buildings to address the biggest ideas in art, urban planning and government.

The same intense, experimental shapes that Hadid used to push the boundaries of buildable architecture take on a playful feel when applied to human-scaled designs like her sneakers, wine bottles, sofas and this flatware set in the New Orleans Museum of Art’s collection.

The British-Iraqi architect’s version of forks, spoons and a knife made with German manufacturer WMF adheres to certain Western fine dining conventions — a deep spoon for soup, a dull knife for cutting and a small fork for salad, for instance.

Unlike other traditional cutlery designs, however, the “Zaha” flatware set flows together as a single assembly that seems to prioritize its striking look, perhaps over its utility.

A 2007 New York Times design review noted the pointed spoon is “marvelous for excavating ice cream” but that other aspects of the design make eating an “adventure.”

The work is on view in an installation of objects related to dining culture in Café NOMA.

Flight cancellations, delays mar holiday travel at Logan

Logan Airport was a frustratingly busy place to be Monday as travelers faced flight cancellations and delays just a day after Christmas.

There were 75 cancellations and 300 delays in Boston as of 7:45 p.m., according to Flight Aware.

Southwest topped the list with 28 cancellations and four delays. JetBlue followed behind with 13 cancellations and 140 delays.

Among the other airlines affected by both cancellations and delays were Cape Air, Delta, Spirit, United, and Jazz, per the flight tracker. Another 18 airlines experienced flight delays, but no cancellations as of 7:45 p.m.

In a statement on its website, Southwest acknowledged that “continuing challenges are impacting our customers and employees in a significant way that is unacceptable” as the result of winter weather.

The airline said that it had been “fully staffed and prepared for the approaching holiday weekend when the severe weather swept across the continent,” but the winter storm had disrupted flights across its network.

“With no concern higher than ultimate safety, the people of Southwest share a goal to take care of each and every customer,” Southwest wrote. “We recognize falling short and sincerely apologize.”

Across the U.S., there were more than 3,800 cancellations and more than 7,100 delays on Monday, Flight Aware reported.

“The ticket agent said there’s nothing she can do for me,” one traveler told WBZ-TV on Monday. She has nothing for later, she had nothing for Tuesday, she has nothing for Wednesday and the only thing she has is for Thursday and there’s no guarantee.”
