Adventure Park in Sandwich on track to reopen by April 2024. What we know.

Ziplining is on track to return to Sandwich by April 2024, after Heritage Museums & Gardens’ Adventure Park secured a necessary building permit at the beginning of the month.

The park features an extensive aerial climbing course with about 80 treetop platforms, as well as ziplining, according to its website.

The permit clears the way for the construction of two yurts, or portable, circular dwellings; a platform and an aerial adventure course; and the construction of parking and a sidewalk. Sandwich Building Commissioner Brendan Brides confirmed the permit was issued Feb. 1.

The park is the subject of some controversy. A group of Sandwich residents has been against Heritage’s Adventure Park since its inception and have been in and out of court with Heritage, Outdoor Ventures, a commercial park design firm and the town of Sandwich since 2014.

Participants will be given three pieces of bubble gum, which will act as their “ticket” to race. Racers will give it to the person at the start of the course to race, and they will get a piece of bubble gum if they win.

The 2024 race schedule:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 21, dual slalom
  • Wednesday, Feb. 28, obstacle course

Greenbrook Adventure Park pavilion rebuild due in July

Tom Merrell, the director of operations for the Lakewood Ranch Inter-District Authority, has told Greenbrook residents that their new pavilion in the Greenbrook Adventure Park could be complete as early as July.

The former pavilion burned due to fireworks early on July 5 and the remaining structure was demolished Oct. 1.

Merrell said a group of teens were shooting fireworks late the night of July 4 and into the next morning. After they were done, they cleaned the area and threw the used fireworks into the garbage can.

“They did what every parent asks them to do, clean up after yourself,” Merrell said. “However, they just didn’t understand there was a possibility with the fireworks that had been spent that they could still catch fire. About an hour later it caught flame.”

East Manatee Fire Rescue, Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and the state Fire Marshal’s office conducted an investigation with the Fire Marshal’s Office determining there was no criminal intent, and that the fire was an accident. As a result, no charges are being filed, and the IDA will not file any civil litigation, Merrell said.

With the demolition complete, the area’s power has been restored, but there are internet service signal issues.

The IDA is working with the architecture firm WBRC Inc. on the design of the new pavilion.

The demolition of the Greenbrook Adventure Park pavilion is complete. Now, the Inter-District Authority is designing the new pavilion.

Merrell said residents were happy with the design of the previous pavilion, so the only improvements made will be the inclusion of a fire retardant system and a storage room to keep supplies separated from the electrical room. The pavilion will be built up to current standards and codes.

“We’ve learned from events that have happened,” Merrell

“Well, it’ll be the first launching coaster in Arizona, that’s for sure and this is [magnetic propulsion]… the same sort of technology that launches, you know, planes off an aircraft carrier. So that’s super exciting. So, it’s very fast, very quiet, very efficient,” said Cornell.

Aerial footage from the Mattel Adventure Park construction site where the rollercoaster will open: “This this ride like all of our rides, loads and unloads indoors, it will then peek straight through the roof on the lift, come out the upside of the roof, and it will bellow around the entire roof and come back into a double downward helix of 660 degrees comes back inside and slams on the brake. This is you know the ultimate in Hot Wheels experience,” said Cornell.

According to Cornell, this is the family coaster and there will be another Hot Wheels-themed roller coaster geared for those seeking an adrenaline rush.

“This is a super themed car. I mean, the front end of this this vehicle is chromed carbon fiber. You know, the flames, Mattel worked with us to make sure that these cars were as authentic to the Hot Wheels car as they possibly could be,” said Cornell.

Gunstock Adventure Park at Gunstock Mountain Resort closed Thursday and will remain closed until further notice after the resort’s entire management team resigned Wednesday night.A sign at the ticket office Thursday notified people that the park was closed.”Coming up here, I was super excited looking at the mountain and how beautiful it is, but we’ll find something else to do, I guess,” said Kalie Walker, who was visiting from Florida.Tom Day served as the president and general manager until Wednesday night, when he and the senior management team resigned. Commissioner Gary Kiedaisch also resigned at Wednesday night’s meeting of the Gunstock Area Commission.”We didn’t want to do this,” Day said. But he said managers felt they had to resign because of what he called the overreach of the Gunstock Area Commission, a five-member board appointed by the Belknap County delegation.”The biggest problem we had, we feel that we deal with everything with honesty, integrity and respect with our staff,” Day said. “We asked to be treated that way also. We don’t feel as though that was happening. They also said they had the right to come in and do what they wanted.”Members of the commission met with Gunstock employees Thursday afternoon. News 9 spoke with Commissioner Jade Wood, who declined an on-camera interview, but said the commission’s No. 1 priority is the staff. Wood also applauded employees for their hard work. “This area commission that oversees Gunstock just doesn’t see the value,” said Gov. Chris Sununu.Sununu said he doesn’t blame the Gunstock managers for walking, and he said the commissioners and Belknap County state representatives should be removed from the board.”The people of Belknap County have all the opportunity in the world, whether it’s through elections or a recall effort,” Sununu said. “Change that team. Bring that management team back in.”In … Read the rest
