10 great drivable vacation spots from New Jersey

Now that summer has unofficially come to an end, many smart travelers choose this time of year to take a vacation. Prices have dropped while the weather is better than ever. The crowds are reduced, and traveling is a lot easier…BY CAR.

If you’ve taken a flight recently you know how crazy things have gotten, from long delays to multiple cancelations.

The good news is that there are plenty of great vacations within decent driving distance from New Jersey, not to mention the Jersey Shore that you can almost have to yourself, especially during the week.

Here in the northeastern part of the country, we are blessed with so many amazing places to see and some special resorts to enjoy in probably the best part of the year. Here are just a few of the places you can check out just a few hours from The Garden State.

Top 20 Places You Could Travel to with a Washington Enhanced ID

If you have been itching to get out of town, perhaps even traveling outside of Washington state, did you know that if you have your Enhanced ID/Enhanced Driver’s License you can travel to twenty places without having to get a passport or passport card? **NOTE: This travel benefit only applies if you are traveling by land or by sea! Native Americans can present tribal documents (get more info here).

I had heard that you can upgrade your regular Washington state driver’s license for just 20 bucks, so I made my appointment online at the Department of Licensing office in Union Gap (2725 Rudkin Rd) and waited my turn in line. I had already filled out my initial application on the DOL website so all I had to do was bring along my Social Security Card and a copy of my birth certificate. It didn’t take very long; I would say the whole process once I got to the DMV was no more than 30 minutes, if that. Not bad for a $20 upgrade!

The coolest part of the experience was once my picture was taken for my new enhanced ID, the clerk told me that I was now allowed to travel to Canada and Mexico with my new license! I did some research later and found out that we can also travel to United States Territories and a few spots in the Caribbean as well! Certain restrictions apply including some COVID-19-related precautions.

Where can you travel with an Enhanced ID?

  1. Domestically within the United States
  2. American Samoa
  3. Baker Island
  4. Howland Island
  5. Guam
  6. Jarvis Island
  7. Johnston Atoll
  8. Kingman Reef
  9. Midway Islands
  10. Navassa Island
  11. Northern Mariana Islands
  12. Palau
  13. Palmyra Atoll
  14. Puerto Rico
  15. US Virgin Islands (St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas)
  16. Wake Island
  17. Mexico
  18. Canada
  19. Bermuda

One of the Most Relaxing Vacation Spots is in Montana

Sometimes, you need your vacation to be relaxing, with time to clear your mind.

Thrillist made a list of the Best Relaxing Vacation Destinations in the United States, and one place in Montana landed on the list. Montana has many relaxing vacation destinations, but the place Thrillist named is my favorite.

The list claims that one of the most relaxing vacation destinations in the United States is Flathead Lake in western Montana. Flathead is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi and is a dream to visit.

Thrillist describes Flathead Lake as a low-fuss destination to get away from cities packed with tourists, like Bozeman, Big Sky, and Missoula. This lake is loved by many, from fishing fans, to boaters, to scuba divers. It has something for everyone.

I grew up on Flathead Lake and was fortunate to spend many summers hanging out either on the lake or on the shore with friends or family. The lake is massive enough to have several islands you can have a picnic on or explore. Plus, there’s nowhere you’ll find clearer water. It’s a special place to visit.

Additionally, there are several towns around the lake to either camp, visit, or lodge, depending on activities you’re interested in and how quiet you’d like your vacation to be. Polson, Bigfork, Woods Bay, Rollins, and Finley Point are all spots on Flathead Lake that are on the water, but don’t deal with constant tourists.

So if you’re tired of tourists and need some peace, head up to Flathead Lake. You won’t regret it.

12 secrets of Great Adventure’s classic coaster

Six Flags Great Adventure has been providing thrills, chills, and family entertainment in Jackson, N.J. since 1974.

Some were saddened to see that the park did not invest in any brand new rides for the 2022 season. But Six Flags did announce the return and revitalization of an old friend.

Originally built in 1999 and rebranded as Bizarro in 2009, Great Adventure has newly restored, repainted, and renamed the Medusa floorless roller coaster for 2022.

I have a deeply personal connection to Medusa. It was the 2nd roller coaster I ever rode (after the Great American Scream Machine). And I had the honor and privilege of working Medusa as night shift lead during part of the 2004 operating season. So, needless to say, I’m thrilled to see its grand return to the back corner of the park.

I recently had the opportunity to ride the new-and-improved Medusa. And it is riding as fast and smooth as ever. The paint job looks fantastic — even better than the original. And the trains look spiffy, sporting brand new seats. The ride’s theming elements are pretty lackluster, but I was told that some finishing touches are yet to come.

Medusa is now open to the public during regular park hours, as operating conditions allow.

In celebration of Medusa’s grand return, I wanted to share some inside knowledge on this classic, trailblazing, world-class roller coaster.
